If you need friends, make cookies.

Bake sales seemed to be the most popular way to raise funds when I was in high school, although I doubt it’s still allowed in schools today.  These Betty Crocker Chocolate Chip cookies were my specialty back then, and actually gained me one life-long friend.  The secret is not really in the recipe, but in the chocolate chips…Guittard Milk Chocolate Chips.  They’re huge and yummy.  Nowadays I rely more on the BBFCCC (Best Big Fat Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies), which has some notoriety on the web. But my friend graduated this past week-

So I re-visted this old-time favorite for his graduation gift.

Betty Crocker’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

3/4 cup granulated sugar

3/4 cup packed brown sugar

1 cup butter, softened

1 large egg

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup coarsely chopped nuts

1 package (12 ounces) chocolate chips

Directions:

  1. Heat oven to 375 degrees
  2. Mix sugars, butter and egg in large bowl. Stir in flour, baking soda and salt (dough will be stiff). Stir in nuts and chocolate chips.
  3. Drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls about 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheet. Flatten slightly
  4. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until light brown (centers will be soft). Cool slightly; remove from cookie sheet. Cool on wire rack
